North Shore Dojo's special needs program focuses on mastering sequences, directions, physical coordination, and muscle memory displayed through kata. North Shore Dojo utilizes many techniques as well as apparatuses to challenge and motivate students in a fun environment. Sensei Kohn has been working with students with special needs for the past 25 years, and has had great success with a wide spectrum of specially challenged children. Sensei Kohn specifically concentrates on improving balance, coordination, strength building, socialization skills, and the mastery work of karate. Sensei Kohn's goal is also to try and mainstream as many specially challenged students into the group program as possible. Dr. Ken Moses, a clinical psychotherapist and father of son Kiel with special needs, explains: "Kohn is intuitively the best teacher I have ever seen. This is a person that has a natural talent. He has gotten Kiel to do things with his body that physical therapists and occupational therapists have not been able to do."
